ASCENSION PARISH, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Ascension Parish.

Just before 5 a.m., police were called to a crash involving a bicyclist on LA 22, just west of LA 937 in Ascension Parish. Police identified the victim as John A. Callender, 29, of Saint Amant.

According to LSP, Callender was riding his bicycle in the eastbound lane on LA 22 heading west. At the same time, a 2017 Silverado was traveling in the westbound lane on LA 22.

“While traveling in a passing zone, the Chevrolet crossed the center of the road to pass a vehicle in front of it. As the Chevrolet was traveling west in the eastbound lane, it struck the rear of the bicycle,” LSP said.

State police said Callender was thrown from his motorcycle and died at the hospital from his injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and did not suffer any injuries, according to LSP.

A routine toxicology sample was taken for testing. This is an ongoing investigation.
