Cyclist from St. Amant dies after early morning accident in Ascension Parish

ST. AMANT – A St. Amant bicyclist was struck by a truck on La. 22 early Thursday morning, state police said.

John Callender, 29, was riding his bicycle westbound in the eastbound lane of Louisiana 22 around 5 a.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck that was crossing the center of the road to pass a westbound vehicle in front of it. Callender was struck from behind and thrown from his bicycle.

He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, state police said. The driver of the truck was uninjured and no impairment is suspected.
