2 people were arrested at a pro-Palestine rally at the University of Houston

University of Houston protesters moved a pro-Palestine rally to the campus police station after officers quickly cleared them from an encampment Wednesday morning.

Two people were arrested, although it was not immediately clear whether they were students or what charges they were being held on, a UH spokesman said.

Authorities also remained at Butler Plaza, where protesters had gathered on tarps and in tents earlier in the day. Officers broke up the gathering within hours and the group moved to the UH police station.

About 50 people gathered outside the train station around 10:30 a.m

The students began praying before dawn at the camp, joining a nationwide movement calling on universities to divest from companies they believe are involved in the deaths of people in Palestine. Protests broke out at many universities and resulted in more than 1,000 arrests.

At UH, there were fewer clashes with police during the protests that lasted several days. Officials threatened students with arrest Wednesday before dismantling the facility, students said.

“They ended up violently tearing down our camp,” said Reyna Valdez, an organizer with UH’s Students for Justice in Palestine chapter. “They tore down our barricades, tore them apart, took our tents, threw them aside and started tearing our tarp on the ground.”
