Houston e-waste recycling company advances sustainability mission with new accreditation

An innovative Houston company focused on recycling sustainable technologies has grown.

CompuCycle describes its unique plastics recycling system as the first and only certified single-solution e-waste recycling company. The company’s unique process now allows discarded technology products to be broken down into unique polymers that can then be reused in the manufacturing process.

“Proper management of all electronic components is the cornerstone of sustainability and environmental responsibility,” says Kelly Adels Hess, CEO of CompuCycle, in a press release. “Making monopolymer plastics that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can reuse to produce new electronic devices or other products, while meeting international recycling standards, is a game-changer for domestic companies and those that need their plastics shipped worldwide. »

For now, CompuCycle reports that it is the only service in the country capable of providing a metals and plastics recycling solution in-house. According to the release, the company has met both of the Environmental Protection Agency’s accredited certification standards, e-Stewards and R2.

“We saw an opportunity to solve an industry challenge by creating the nation’s first sustainable, single-solution e-waste management program, which reduces the amount of plastic negatively impacting the environment, while making recycling and reuse advantageous for businesses. This is truly a win for everyone involved,” adds Clive Hess, President of CompuCycle.

CompuCycle, which has more than 20 years of history, added electronics recycling to its toolbox in 2019. Although CompuCycle has focused on the responsible disposal of electronics since Kelly’s father-in-law, John Hess, founded the company in 1996, some recent events have increased the need to recycle more efficiently.

“China no longer accepts scrap metal, which is where a lot of materials would go after they’re dismantled,” Kelly told InnovationMap in 2019. “That’s why we created this solution to be able to responsibly manage them here in the United States “.
