The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Youngstown Police Department’s Office of Internal Affairs are investigating a shooting incident on the city’s West Side that left two people, including a Youngstown police officer, hospitalized.

According to police, a 911 call came in about 1 a.m. Thursday about a domestic violence incident in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue.

According to a police press release, a man inside the house shot at an officer and the officer shot back.

According to a BCI spokesman, both the man who was shot and the officer were taken to the hospital.

The man who was shot is in critical condition. His name has not yet been released.

The officer was uninjured and released, according to BCI. The company said he was taken to the hospital as a “precautionary measure.”

The officers involved have been placed on leave, as per police department policy. The Internal Investigations Division is currently reviewing whether YPD policies were followed.

BCI was still on site early Thursday conducting investigations.
