Activists demand suspension of Permanent Secretary over sexual harassment allegations – The Sun Nigeria

By Fred Itua, Abuja

The Men Against Rape Foundation (MARF) has called for the immediate suspension of Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Lamuwa pending the outcome of an investigation into serious allegations of sexual harassment.

This demand follows a petition by Ms Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi, a ministry official, who repeatedly accused Lamuwa of unwanted advances and abuse of office.

MARF praised Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar “for his decisive and courageous actions in bringing these allegations to light.”

In a letter dated 27 May 2024 to the Head of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, Tuggar underlined the seriousness of the situation and called for an urgent and thorough investigation.

In an electronic statement by the Foundation’s Executive Director, Lemmy Ughegbe, and Director of Strategic Development, Augustine Eigbe, the Foundation expressed its appreciation for Tuggar’s integrity in tackling the issue head-on.

“We welcome the minister’s refusal to comply with the confidentiality agreement often imposed in high office and his commitment to justice and accountability,” they said.

MARF stressed the need for the immediate suspension of Ibrahim Lamuwa to prevent any possible compromise of the investigation.

They also demanded that Ms Ajayi and other victims should be protected from any form of harassment now and in the future because they courageously came forward with their complaints.

A petition submitted through her legal representative, Femi Falana (SAN), described numerous instances of harassment by the Permanent Secretary, including inappropriate comments and physical advances.

According to Falana, “these measures have created a hostile and unsafe work environment, not only for Ms. Ajayi, but also for other employees.”

MARF reiterated its zero tolerance towards sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and sexual harassment in the workplace.

They denounced that such misconduct is widespread in various institutions and is often inadequately addressed. They stated: “The Foundation’s position is clear: any form of harassment and abuse of power must be met with swift and decisive action to protect victims and maintain ethical standards.”

We call for a full and impartial investigation into the allegations against Ibrahim Lamuwa.

They called for appropriate disciplinary action if the allegations prove true and stressed the need for a safe and fair workplace for all.

The organization stated that “the Secretary of State’s actions set a strong precedent for leaders across all sectors and reaffirm that no one is above the law.”

“MARF therefore hopes that this incident marks a significant turning point in the fight against sexual harassment and abuse in Nigerian workplaces,” they added.
