Viral driver with revoked license receives learner’s permit

Corey HarrisThe man who caused a stir during a virtual court hearing about his driving license suspension because he was driving a car never had a driver’s license.

Last month, a video of Harris’ virtual court hearing before a judge in Ann Arbor, Michigan Cedric Simpson went viral when the defendant appeared behind the wheel on Zoom.

“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” asked Simpson.

“Actually, I’m driving to my doctor’s office,” Harris replied. “So just give me a second. I’m parking.”

The judge was baffled that Harris had been driving without a license during his hearing. He eventually revoked his bail and ordered him to report to jail that same day. He spent two days in jail.

Last week, the judge overseeing Harris’ case said the man had no driver’s license to be revoked.

Accordingly Angela Benander of the Michigan Secretary of State, Harris’ license was initially revoked in 2007 when he failed to pay child support. Harris has never had a driver’s license, so his rights to get one were revoked, according to his attorney. Dionne Webster-Cox.

Webster-Cox said her client assumed he had a driver’s license because it had been revoked.

On Friday (June 7), Harris took “a step in the right direction” by obtaining his learner’s permit, his lawyer said via PEOPLE.

A video shared on social media shows Harris dancing outside the Michigan Secretary of State’s office after receiving his permit.

“Congratulations! You did it!” a woman can be heard saying in the video.

Harris will have his first opportunity to get his driver’s license on July 7 after completing a driving test.
