Buffalo, New York adds new tax starting in 2025

These new taxes in New York State are ridiculous. Byron Brown, Mayor of the City of Buffalo proposed residential property at 9% tax increase and this is not the only tax that is coming.

The new trend in hotel taxes has almost completely taken over New York State. Buffalo was the last major city in New York state to resist the tax, and while it’s a bit delayed, the “bed tax” is coming to Western New York as well. Keep in mind that this is in addition to New York State sales tax.

How does Buffalo’s proposed 5% tax stack up against the rest of New York’s major cities? Here are the taxes.

  • Albania: 6.5%
  • Rochester: 6%
  • New York: 5.875%
  • Buffalo: 5%
  • Syracuse: The Syracuse Common Council is considering supporting a 2% hotel tax in the city. The city tax would be in addition to Onondaga County’s 7 percent hotel tax.

Technically, Buffalo approved the bed tax for FY 2025, but it appears it won’t be implemented anytime soon. The bill failed to find a sponsor in New York State in time before the budget deadline. It is expected that by the end of 2025, the “hotel room tax” will be implemented in the city of Buffalo.

The hotel bed tax in the United States has truly become a common and beneficial tax that cities have used to generate tons of money for their budgets. Only temporarily in New York was the bed tax suspended for a few months in 2021.

LEARN MORE: Air BnB owners in New York State also have new rules to follow. The biggest change in 2024 is that homeowners will no longer be allowed to keep cameras INSIDE their home. At this time, the hotel bed tax does not apply to Air BnB guests.
