Marietta announces David Beam as new police chief, makes interim position permanent – ​​WSB-TV Channel 2

MARIETTA, Ga. – In a new step in his 38-year career with the Marietta Police Department, Interim Chief of Police David Beam was officially and permanently named full-time chief Wednesday.

The city of Marietta said in a statement that Beam was named permanent chief following a vote during a special city council meeting.

Beam has been a member of the MPD since 1986, when he started as a police officer. During his career with the department, he has held a variety of positions, from serving as deputy police chief in 1999 to serving as interim police chief from July 2006 to January 2007 and again from January 2024 to the present.

In addition to his career and experience in law enforcement, Beam was an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Kennesaw State University from January 2008 to May 2016 and a member of the Marietta Pension Board from 1999 to 2006.

“I am extremely honored to be named Chief of Police of the Marietta Police Department,” Beam said in a statement. “I would like to thank the City Manager, Mayor and City Council for putting their trust in me to lead the department. I look forward to working with the dedicated officers and staff of the Marietta Police Department to continue the department’s long-standing tradition of providing the best possible protection and service to the community of Marietta.”

In comments about his promotion, Beam also praised the city’s police department, saying, “The City of Marietta is served by a diverse, well-trained, intelligent, courageous, dedicated and loyal group of police officers and staff. They are true professionals and have a servant’s heart. We will continue to work together as a cohesive team to make Marietta the safest city to live, learn, work and play.”

According to the city, Beam’s promotion to police chief was a unanimous decision of the city council, and Mayor Steve Tumlin subsequently swore him into office.

City Manager Bill Bruton Jr. said after an extensive search for a new police chief, Beam was his choice and he recommended him to the City Council for full appointment as police chief.

“I am confident that David will be an excellent chief. He has served in all areas of the department during his 38 years of service and has been deputy chief since 1999. At some point, I also appointed interim chief Beam as interim human resources director because I believe in his abilities,” Bruton said. “I delayed the hiring process for the position so that interim chief Beam would have the opportunity to show what he can do and the excellent results would be there for all to see.”
