YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A city police officer and a suspect were hospitalized following a shooting just after midnight Thursday on Youngstown’s west side.

Staff Inspector Lt. Brian Butler said officers were responding to a domestic violence call in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue when gunfire erupted between a man and police.

Both the man and the officer were injured and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Butler said the terms for both were not yet available.

The state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation decides whether to file charges.

The Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division will also conduct a separate investigation to ensure that department policies were followed.

The last shooting by a city police officer occurred on October 12, when a 45-year-old man was shot and killed by officers responding to a burglary alarm on Helena Avenue.

BCI is investigating this case. A final report is pending.

In August, several city police officers who are part of the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team were involved in a fatal shooting during a standoff in Howland.

In February, someone fired multiple shots at a member of the department’s Neighborhood Response Unit while he was on patrol. No arrests were made in that case.
