NIA employees suspend nationwide strike

Employees of the National Identification Authority (NIA) have called off their nationwide strike.

On June 10, 2024, employees of the National Identification Authority across the country called an indefinite strike.

The decision to strike was intended to highlight the need for better working conditions for the workforce after negotiations with the Fair Wages Commission had stalled.

The strike hit the population hard as people trying to replace their Ghana Card or register for a Ghana Card were stranded at the National Identification Authority offices.

In a statement announcing their decision to end the strike, NIA staff said their decision was subject to the outcome of discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on Friday, June 14, 2024.

They continued: “This suspension follows several interventions by stakeholders including the Honorary Minister of National Security, the invitation of the Fair Wages Commission to the negotiating table, the advice of the parent union based on today’s decision of the National Labour Commission and the public outcry of Ghanaians.”

Workers are expected to be on the job on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
