NIA workers suspend strike ahead of key negotiations

The Divisional Executives Council of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike which began on June 10, 2024.

The decision to suspend industrial action comes as the union prepares for crucial talks with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), scheduled for Friday 14 June 2024.

The suspension came after a series of interventions by key stakeholders, including an appeal by the Minister of National Security and an invitation by the FWSC to return to the negotiating table. The recommendations of the union’s umbrella body in light of the recent decision of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the vocal concerns of the Ghanaian public also played a role in this resolution.

In a statement released on Wednesday 12 June, the Divisional Executives Council said the FWSC had assured it of its willingness to act in good faith in its future commitments.

“However, this gesture will be put to the test on Friday 14 June 2024. Members can therefore be assured that if the Government does not show genuine confidence by granting us institutional allowances at the end of negotiations on Friday, we will not hesitate to return to our industrial action. This must be noted,” it added.

The Council therefore appealed to its members to report for work on Thursday, 10 June 2024.

“We appreciate your unprecedented solidarity and commitment following the strike declaration. The action has really had a huge impact. However, we expect positive results within a very short time.”

The FWSC was also urged to show good faith in its return to the negotiating table in the interest of industrial peace.
