In southeast Allegan County, sirens will be turned off and residents will be urged to be alert as severe weather threatens

During the monthly siren test on June 7, officials discovered that the sirens in this area were not going off as scheduled.

ALLEGAN COUNTY, Michigan — In advance of severe weather expected Thursday, Allegan County authorities are warning residents that outdoor warning sirens in the southeastern part of the county are currently not functioning.

During the monthly siren test on June 7, officials discovered that the sirens in this area were not going off as scheduled.

They investigated the cause of the failure and stated that they were able to trace it back to the VHF facility in Otsego.

“TeleRad is actively working to identify and resolve the issue,” Allegan County Emergency Management (ACEM) said in a statement. “However, due to the complexity of the issue, there is currently no definitive timeline for restoring siren functionality.”

Severe weather is expected Thursday afternoon. Meteorologists at 13 ON YOUR SIDE have been tracking the approaching storms. The current forecast can be found at wzzm13.com/weather.

ACEM said that authorities are taking precautionary measures in light of the upcoming weather conditions and are issuing the following warning to the public:

Residents in the affected areas are advised that outdoor warning sirens may not be operational during the impending severe weather. While manual activation is possible in some areas, it is recommended that individuals have multiple methods to receive emergency notifications. Allegan County recognizes the importance of timely and effective warning systems, especially in light of the threat of severe weather. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all residents, and we are working diligently to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

The Allegan County Department of Emergency Management urges residents to stay informed and prepared by:

  • Monitoring local news and weather reports.
  • Have multiple communication channels such as NOAA Weather Radio and mobile alert apps to receive emergency notifications.

ACEM said updates on the status of the outdoor warning sirens will be provided as new information becomes available.
