Fort Worth man randomly killed on his way to work – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Fort Worth family says they have questions after their loved one was killed in a random act of violence.

According to police, 36-year-old Lee Douglas was shot early on the morning of May 30 as he left work on Trinity Boulevard. He died in the hospital on Tuesday.

After the arrest, police records showed that Douglas was not the only victim of the attack, so Douglas’ family believes they still do not know the full story of what happened.

For Lee Douglas’ sisters, the pain can be overwhelming. Douglas died in hospital yesterday, 12 days after being shot twice.

“It was so random and like I said, there’s no information about it. They’re sugarcoating it,” Robin Sims said. “My brother lost his life.”

Fort Worth police said Douglas was walking to his car outside his job at Refresco Beverages before 3 a.m. on May 30 when he was shot in the back and then again in the face as he lay on the ground.

In their initial press release, Fort Worth police said a male victim was shot twice by an unknown assailant and his injuries were not life-threatening.

However, the family said Douglas’ injuries were actually more serious: He was intubated in intensive care and eventually died when a blood clot traveled to his brain.

“So yes, the whole ‘life-threatening’ was probably an euphemism,” Sims said.

Police arrested 18-year-old Decan Mederios in connection with the incident, and their report raised new concerns for Douglas’ family.

“This was obviously a larger incident than just the random shooting of a single person in a warehouse,” Sims said.

Investigators’ files showed another man was listed as a victim in the incident, and Mederios is charged with four counts of aggravated assault.

The family said Douglas’s co-workers heard more gunshots while waiting for paramedics to arrive and they believe police did not tell them the full extent of the incident.

“When my brother was able to get the tubes out, we got more out of him than we did out of the detectives or anyone else,” Sims said.

NBC 5 brought the family’s concerns to Fort Worth police.

“This appears to be a random shooting by a non-Texas individual who was simply passing through,” the department said in a statement.

We asked if anyone else was shot during the incident – the police said they could not provide any information at this time.

“I see it all the time on TV and you don’t believe it could happen to you and your family,” said Aushalay Meadows, Douglas’ sister. “And then it happens.”

It was the latest tragedy for this family, as Douglas’ sister was murdered last year.

As they plan his funeral, Douglas’ relatives said they are hoping for answers.

“I’m tired of having to bury my siblings, I’m tired of burying family members,” Meadows said. “And my brother doesn’t deserve this.”

A Fort Worth police spokesman said the incident is still under investigation and they hope to have more information in the coming days.
