McDonald’s cup helps solve unsolved case in Milwaukee, wife arrested

Years after a Milwaukee man was found shot to death in a cemetery, his wife was arrested in California and extradited to face murder charges there. Evidence, including a McDonald’s cup found in the victim’s car, led to the arrest of Cassandra Hult, who now faces first-degree premeditated murder in the death of Jason Sawtelle. A jogger who frequently ran through the cemetery noticed the car parked in the same spot for two days and called 911 after spotting the body. Sawtelle’s body was found in his car at St. Adalbert Cemetery, 3564 S. 13th St., on March 23, 2020. Investigators determined Sawtelle had been shot once in the back of the head. An empty .380 cartridge case was found in his car, as well as two McDonald’s cups and a receipt showing a purchase on March 22, 2020, at 12:29 p.m. DNA and fingerprint analysis revealed that one of the straws from the cups contained Sawtelle’s DNA and Hult’s fingerprints. Hult initially told police that she and Sawtelle argued in his car on the morning of March 22, 2020, but that around 10 a.m. he became violent and pushed her out of the vehicle. She claimed she had not seen him since. However, cell tower recordings and subsequent interviews contradicted her account. Witnesses in Arizona and California, where Hult later lived, told police that she confessed to killing her husband. One witness said Hult threatened to kill her during a FaceTime call, claiming that she “killed her husband in Milwaukee and had ‘bodies on her.'”

Years after a Milwaukee man was found shot to death in a cemetery, his wife was arrested and extradited to California to face murder charges.

Evidence, including a McDonald’s cup found in the victim’s car, led to the arrest of Cassandra Hult, who is now charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the death of Jason Sawtelle.

A jogger who frequently ran through the cemetery noticed the car parked in the same spot for two days and called 911 after discovering the body. Sawtelle’s body was found in his car at St. Adalbert Cemetery, 3564 S. 13th St., on March 23, 2020.

Investigators determined that Sawtelle had been shot once in the back of the head. An empty .380 caliber shell casing was found in his car, along with two McDonald’s cups and a receipt showing a purchase on March 22, 2020 at 12:29 p.m.

However, cell phone tower recordings and later interviews contradicted her statement. Witnesses in Arizona and California, where Hult later lived, told police that she had confessed to murdering her husband.

A witness said Hult threatened to kill her during a FaceTime call, claiming she “killed her husband in Milwaukee and had ‘bodies on her.'”
