Rape case: Supreme Court commutes sentences of four to life imprisonment | Kochi News

Kochi: A Supreme Court bench comprising AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and VM Syam Kumar has commuted the sentences of four men convicted of gang rape and jewellery theft in Kalamassery in 2015 from life imprisonment to 30 years in prison. The accused – Athul of Thrikkakara, Aneesh and Manoj of Aluva and Nias of Thrikkakara – had challenged the court’s verdict. The charge was that on February 14, 2015, Athul and Aneesh lured a young Tamil woman and an elderly woman, both daily wage earners, into an autorickshaw on the pretext of hiring them to weed a deserted area near the medical college in Kalamassery. On reaching there, the accused attacked the women, raped the young woman and stole her gold chain, ring, mobile phone and money. Later, the fifth and sixth accused, Bineesh and Jasmine, provided a hiding place for the accused and helped sell the ornaments. On July 18, 2016, the court found all four accused guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment and fines. Bineesh and Jasmine were sentenced to three years imprisonment and a fine. Jasmine received an additional three years for aiding and abetting destruction of stolen property. In her appeal, the division court found that the first four accused did not deserve leniency considering the seriousness of the crime. However, the court took into account their younger age, their conduct during the nine years they had already spent in prison and their potential for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. tnn
