Man arrested in Arroyo Grande for stealing Tesla. Police had help from afar

A suspected drunk man was arrested in Arroyo Grande on Tuesday for car theft and public drunkenness – and police received remote assistance from a car dealership representative several miles away.

Police said they responded around 12:13 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a man yelling at a passerby from his vehicle in the 1100 block of West Branch Street in Arroyo Grande.

When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old David Camp of Pleasanton in the vehicle – reportedly a Tesla stolen from an “out of area” dealer – showing signs of alcohol poisoning.

Camp refused to leave the vehicle.

Police said they then contacted the Tesla dealership representative, who remotely unlocked the vehicle. Officers opened the door and arrested Camp without incident.

Police did not say which dealership the Tesla was stolen from or when it was stolen. The department did not immediately return a call requesting that information.

The nearest Tesla dealer is in San Luis Obispo.

Camp, the man arrested, is from Pleasanton in northern California. A Tesla dealership is located in nearby Dublin. There are nearly a dozen other Tesla dealerships in the Bay Area.

Camp was arrested for car theft, resisting arrest and public intoxication.
