Vermont State Police say they are investigating the death of a man who was shot by a police officer in Orange on Wednesday afternoon.

Few details about the shooting were available late Wednesday afternoon, including the identity of the man killed.

In a press release, state police said the shooting occurred around 1:25 p.m. outside a home on Spencer Road and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police officer was not injured but was taken to the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin for examination, the press release said.

The police said that the investigation was still at an “early stage.” Detectives were already on site and a forensic team was on the way.

The deceased’s body will be taken to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death and to establish his identity, the press release said.

“Following standard protocol,” the press release continued, “State Police will release the name of the officer who fired his weapon the day after the shooting.”
