Deputy sheriff kills woman. Another man is arrested for murder.

A Riverside sheriff’s deputy shot a woman during an altercation between her and another man and subsequently charged the man with murder.

The incident occurred early Tuesday when a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to contact “multiple individuals” in the 1000 block of West 6th Street in Corona, a department news release said.

The people the officer wanted to contact fled and were pursued by him, the department said.

“As the officer rounded the corner of a building, a male suspect charged at him and a struggle ensued,” the department said in a press release.

The deputy engaged in a struggle with the man, Eric Nourani, and a woman, who the department said also began attacking the deputy. The deputy then shot and killed the woman, the news release said.

The officer and Nourani continued to struggle, with Nourani attempting to take the officer’s gun, the press release said. Good Samaritans assisted in Nourani’s arrest.

The woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The sheriff’s department did not initially release the victim’s name because the family had not yet been notified.

Nourani was charged with murder, attempted murder of a police officer, assault and resisting an officer with violence.

The California Department of Justice is investigating the shooting, which involved a deputy sheriff.

Although he did not pull the trigger himself, Nourani could be charged with murder as an accessory to murder.

While the law was changed in 2018 to limit the number of people who could be charged with murder who did not actually pull the trigger, the law says Nourani could still be charged if he was “a major participant in the underlying crime and acted with reckless indifference to human life.”

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office has not yet filed formal charges against Nourani.
