The Buffalo Sabers need to add a lot of skills this summer

The 2023-24 season was disappointing for the Buffalo Sabres, a team that met playoff expectations but fell short, going 39-37-6 with 84 points, eight points behind the second-place Wild Card.

The team did not produce much offense, with forward Alex Tuch and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin leading the team with 59 points. Right behind them was Tage Thompson with 56, and after John Peterka, no other player was able to reach the 50-point mark.

As they head into the offseason, the question arises: Are they trying to add more skills and score goals? Or is an alternative approach to building a roster possible for a Sabers team with a lot of potential, but little results?

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL defenseman Colby Cohen discuss the Sabres’ 2023-24 season and where they see the club heading this summer.

Tyler Yaremchuk: One team that I find interesting is the Buffalo Sabres. When Frank Seravalli and I discussed the Detroit Red Wings on our edition of the Monday show, we thought they needed to add another good veteran forward and defenseman, and I honestly think Buffalo is in the same boat .

They have $23 million to spend on a few locations that they obviously need to improve. I think what general manager Kevyn Adams needs to do is look for the best forward available – center, left wing or right wing – just go out and add skills.

Colby Cohen: Look, they need skills but they need heavy skill. We’re looking at the Stanley Cup Playoffs and successful teams have big players. We see the heaviness of the Florida Panthers’ bottom six players.

Buffalo has guys who can skate and can shoot, but they need heavy players who can be physical, lean on their stick and know how to take on the best players in the world.
