More than 80 dead in Democratic Republic of Congo after boat capsizes | News

More than 80 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) when the boat they were travelling on sank, President Felix Tshisekedi announced.

The accident occurred on Wednesday on the Kwa River, about 70 kilometers from the town of Mushie in Mai-Ndombe province.

“The President of the Republic calls for an investigation into the true causes of this regrettable incident in order to prevent such a disaster from happening again in the future,” the President’s Office said in a post on X.

Fatal boat accidents are common in the Democratic Republic of Congo because ships are often loaded far beyond their capacity.
