Charlottesville Police will resume non-emergency operations starting June 1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (NOW CVILLE) – Given significant progress in hiring, the Charlottesville Police Department announces it will resume responding next month to certain postings that were suspended at the end of 2021 due to staffing shortages. At the end of 2021, the Charlottesville Police Department stopped responding to non-emergency calls for service… such as credit card fraud, thefts and vandalism. The decision was made in response to what it called a “staffing emergency.” Over the last 16 months, police have made significant progress in staffing sworn positions, meaning police can now respond to non-urgent emergency calls.

Effective June 1, 2024, officers will resume in-person response to the following non-emergency incidents:

Credit card fraud
False pretext
Impersonation
Theft from buildings
Theft from vehicles
Theft of vehicle parts
vandalism
Lost property
