Rapist sentenced to 7 years in prison

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that Obed Arellano-Mendez, 37, of Newburgh, was sentenced on Monday, May 6, 2024, to seven years in prison and five years of post-release supervision in connection with his prior guilt Pleaded in Orange County Court to first-degree rape.

As part of the sentence, Arellano-Mendez will also be registered as a sex offender under the New York Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA).

The defendant previously admitted in court that on or about October 29, 2023, at a location in the City of Newburgh, he had sexual intercourse with another person who was incapable of consent due to physical helplessness.

Hoovler thanked the Newburgh City Police Department for their investigation and arrest of Arellano-Mendez.

“The heinous act of sexual assault on a helpless victim is a stark reminder of the ever-present threat of sexual violence in our society,” Hoovler said. “We stand in solidarity with the survivors and vow to fight for justice with unwavering determination. I would like to commend law enforcement’s diligent efforts to quickly respond to and investigate this crime. Their commitment and professionalism are critical to ensuring perpetrators are held accountable and our community remains safe.”


The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Christine Maggiore.
