Young man sent to reformatory for raping minors

The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex.

KOTA KINABALU (June 12): An 18-year-old unemployed man was remanded to a reformatory by a local court for two counts of rape of a minor.

When the case came up for hearing, Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan ordered the young man to submit his probation report prepared by a social welfare officer.

The court ordered that he be sent to school for three years or until he turns 21, whichever is earlier.

The young man had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing, but sentencing was postponed pending the submission of the report.

A representative of the social welfare office had presented the social report and suggested sending the young man to the Henry Gurney School.

The young man admitted to committing the crimes against the 15-year-old schoolgirl on June 19 in a hut and on November 13, 2023 on a beach, both in Papar.

He was convicted under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison term of up to 20 years and flogging if convicted.

The judge also ordered that he be placed under police supervision for two years after leaving the reformatory.
