Houston Police Chief Troy Finner retired amid questions about what he knew about a code that suspended more than 260,000 cases and when he learned about it. The code assigned to the cases indicated they were suspended because the department did not have the staff to investigate them.

Mayor John Whitmire accepted Finner’s retirement Tuesday evening, KTRK reports. Deputy Chief Larry Satterwhite will serve as interim police chief.

In March 2021, former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner selected Finner to take over the department in the fourth-largest city in the United States, overseeing more than 5,300 officers and 1,200 other civilian support employees, according to the site HPD web.
