Four dead and ten injured in accident in Salem district

Four persons, including a girl, died on the spot after a private bus rammed their two-wheelers from behind at Sukkampatti, near Ayodhiyapattinam in Salem district on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

According to police, 35-year-old Lakshmanan of Poovanur, a daily wage labourer, was travelling with his wife Vedavalli on a two-wheeler to attend a relative’s wedding. On another two-wheeler, a man, a woman and a child were travelling on the Salem-Tirupattur road towards Sukkampatti.

Both the two-wheelers were travelling behind a truck which had reduced its speed to overcome a speed bump. At this point, a private city bus travelling from Achankuttapatti to Salem collided with both the two-wheelers and these vehicles in turn hit the truck. In the impact, all five were injured. The three occupants of the second two-wheeler, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, and Vedavalli died on the spot while Lakshmanan sustained injuries. He was admitted to a private hospital. Ten other bus passengers also sustained injuries and were admitted to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital.

All four bodies have been sent to the hospital for postmortem. Veeranam police have registered a case and are investigating. The accident resulted in a disruption of vehicular traffic on the stretch for over 30 minutes.
