Police: 38-year-old woman walking with her two small children on West Lane on Tuesday evening was hit by a car and flown to Stony Brook by helicopter

Riverhead Police are investigating a car crash last night on West Lane in Aquebogue that injured a woman walking down the street with her two young children.

Police said a 38-year-old woman who was walking with her seven-year-old child and a four-month-old infant in a stroller was struck by a car driven by a 66-year-old woman at around 8:13 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the police report, the woman was flown by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her 7-year-old daughter, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the woman’s 4-month-old son were flown by the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment and observation, police said. Police did not release the extent or nature of the mother’s injuries.

The vehicle, a 2015 Cadillac, was traveling northbound on West Lane south of Chris Court when it struck the pedestrians who were traveling northbound on the road, police said. The driver of the vehicle reported no injuries, according to the report.

Police did not release the identity of the driver or the adult pedestrian injured in the accident.

Both the Riverhead Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit and the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit were at the scene to assist with the investigation. The incident is not currently being treated as criminal, according to a Riverhead Police Department news release issued overnight. No criminal charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle, police said.

The investigation is currently ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information about the incident is asked to call Riverhead police at (631) 727-4500. All calls will be treated confidentially, police said.
