Jubahib’s suspension extended to 30 days

DAVAO del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib expressed regret as he informed the public in a statement released on June 10, 2024 that he would not be able to return to his office as governor despite the end of his 60-day preventive suspension.

Previously, the Office of the President imposed another 30-day preventive suspension against him last Friday afternoon, June 7, following complaints from the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (Nordeco).

“Our efforts in engaging consumers to sell their food supplies and services in the Distrito Uno and Island Garden City of Samal are unbroken until the end of 2019. What about our development in engaging consumers in the key districts, cities and industries that are dealing with the power outage and supporting few people in the economy? We will now engage consumers to sell their food supplies and services in the Distrito Uno and Island Garden City of Samal are unbroken until the end of 2019. What about our development in engaging consumers to sell their food supplies and services in the Distrito Uno and Island Garden City of Samal are unbroken until the end of 2019. What are the consumers in major districts, cities and industries engaged in business creation and the global sector… for adequate and affordable electricity for the cities and municipalities of District One and the Island Garden City of Samal began in 2019. What is the reason behind our struggle? Many consumers from different barangays, cities and municipalities, including business groups and other segments of the society, complain of frequent power outages and high electricity bills. “We must not forget that many have died in our struggle for quality electricity supply,” Jubahib said in his statement, referring to years of poor service by Nordeco and frequent power outages as major obstacles to economic opportunities in Davao del Norte, especially in the Island Garden City of Samal.

Jubahib, who has faced criticism and controversy, claims that talks were held with Nordeco to resolve the issue that affects both ordinary consumers and businesses. When formal talks failed, the issue was taken up at the national level. Although Congress and the Senate passed Bill No. 10554 to improve electricity supply in 2022, it was rejected in July.

Jubahib called on the public to stand up and work together to continue efforts to ensure adequate and affordable electricity supply in the province of Davao del Norte.

He stressed that Nordeco had caused significant problems for everyone, especially ordinary consumers, due to frequent power outages, inadequate supplies and exorbitantly high electricity bills.

Despite the current challenges and the form of oppression, abuse or bullying they face, Jubahib assured that they will not stop or remain silent until justice and success are achieved.

He expressed his dissatisfaction with Nordeco and supported efforts to replace the electricity cooperative.

On April 10, Malacañang Palace imposed a 60-day preventive ban on Jubahib for his active participation in a motorcade in support of a House bill to expand the concession area of the Davao Light and Power Company with the aim of ousting Nordeco. He allowed government cars and asked the provincial capitol staff to accompany the motorcade.

The four-page suspension order, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on June 4, states: “The urgent suspension is granted pursuant to Section 53(a) and (b) of Republic Act 7160 and Section 1.8 of Administrative Code No. 23, Series of 1992, as amended. Governor Edwin I. Jubahib is provisionally suspended for 30 days, effective immediately from the date of receipt.” DEF
