Investigation into Yassin’s complaint against UT police completed

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – The investigation into a complaint filed by the owner of Yassin’s Falafel House against the University of Tennessee Police has been completed.

Documents obtained by WATE 6 On Your Side from the University of Tennessee show that the complaint filed by Yassin Terou is deemed “without merit or exoneration.”

Last month, Terou filed the complaint after his arrest at a pro-Palestinian protest on campus. In the complaint, Terou claimed an officer violated his rights at a hospital. During his arrest, Terou reportedly said he had nerve damage and his handcuffs should not be too tight. He also said the position of his arm could affect his health.

It was around this time that Terou requested medical attention. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center less than an hour later. Terou told police that he had been placed in a sling because of his arm pain, and Terou said that an officer removed the sling without requesting medical attention before he was taken to jail.

An internal investigation found that the officer who allegedly removed Terou’s arm sling was told by a nurse that it was not medically necessary and that the officer took special care not to injure Terou when handcuffing him.

Although UT’s investigation is complete, Terou says he is still considering all options. Terou is charged with trespassing for his participation in the protests on campus and is due back in court on June 24.
