23-year-old Sydney teacher arrested after allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy

A teacher in southwest Sydney is accused of sexually assaulting a male student in her car, in what police described as a “heinous” breach of trust.

The 23-year-old woman was arrested at a home in Greenacre on Friday after reports emerged that she had sexually abused a 14-year-old student both on and off school premises last month, police said.

Officers later seized a vehicle and electronic devices from the woman’s home.

She was taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with aggravated sexual intercourse with a child between 14 and 16 years of age (x5), intentional sexual contact with a child between 10 and 16 years of age (x2), intentional inducing a child between 10 and 16 years of age to engage in sexual contact, aggravated intentional performance of a sexual act with a child between 10 and 16 years of age and aggravated inducing a child between 10 and 16 years of age to engage in sexual acts with them.

New South Wales Police Acting Superintendent Michael Haddow said the allegations represented a serious breach of trust given the power imbalance between teachers and students.

“This is disgusting – ultimately teachers have a huge responsibility,” he told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

“This is a very difficult time for the boy and his family. All I can say is that he is receiving fantastic support from both his family and the police.”

Detective Haddow said further investigation would take place at the school.

He urged anyone with further information to contact police and called on all parents in the wider area to have “open, honest and frank” conversations with their children.

“Kids… 14, 15 or 16 – sometimes they act or think they’re a little older than they are, but at the end of the day, kids are vulnerable,” Detective Haddow said.

“They are easily influenced and we urge parents to be careful about who their children spend their time with, who they chat with online and have those difficult conversations.

“Because ultimately, parenthood is not an easy job.”
