Spam incident with TSA at Massachusetts airport goes viral

A Worcester, Massachusetts, man has unexpectedly become a social media star after his carry-on bag stuffed with cans of Spam caught the attention of TSA agents and millions of online viewers. “I’m taking all Spam,” Joel Libed told TSA agents at the Minnesota airport. “I’m so embarrassed.” His video has since been viewed over 5 million times. Libed had just visited the Spam Museum in Minnesota, where he was given his favorite canned meat as a gift. On his way home to Boston, TSA agents stopped him. “I’ve got the Hawaii special edition. I’ve got a teriyaki,” Libed said. TSA agents weren’t sure what to do with the salty jelly in his luggage. “So, there’s a whole bag of Spam in my carry-on and his look was like, ‘Really? Why?’ I said there are other flavors,” Libed told them. By day, Libed works at Welly’s restaurant in Hudson. He also considers himself a self-proclaimed Spam ambassador. Originally from Hawaii, Libed grew up eating Spam. Now he’s trying to get more people to love his favorite dish. “Are you paid to say things like that?” reporter Shaun Chaiyabhat asks Libed. “All I can say is I should be paid,” Libed says. The Spam company is also enjoying the spotlight. It has sent Libed gift boxes and freebies that he has posted online. “I would love to collaborate with Spam and be a Spam influencer, Spam-bassador,” Libed says. Welly’s Restaurant, where Libed works, is capitalizing on his newfound fame. Although Spam is not currently on the menu, they plan to offer a Spam special, nicknamed Joel’s Aloha Burger. They plan to offer the Spam special throughout July.
