Following a second court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 2, a Philippi Police Training Academy instructor accused of raping a female police trainee was released with a warning until the next hearing.

This has been confirmed People’s Post by Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), following the release of the first statement confirming the instructor’s arrest and detailing the incident that allegedly occurred on Sunday, March 31.

“It is alleged that on (Sunday) March 31, a police instructor at the Philippi Police Training Academy in the Western Cape called a female police trainee to his office. She went to the office after having had several excuses in the past as to why she did not go to his office,” the statement said.

The 50-year-old police trainer is accused of locking the intern’s door when she entered his practice and raping her.

After the alleged rape, she was allowed to leave. However, she did not immediately report the incident. The 30-year-old only reported the incident a few days later and the case was reported to Ipid for investigation, the directorate added.

Ipid arrested the police instructor on Sunday, April 21, on rape charges.

He first appeared at Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 22, after which the case was adjourned for a formal bail application.

The Western Cape Police were also asked to comment on the matter, with spokesman Sgt Wesley Twigg simply referring the investigation back to Ipid.
