Dallas police chief fires officer accused of child endangerment and dealing with felon

Dallas Police Chief Eddie García on Tuesday fired an officer accused of endangering a child, contacting a convicted felon outside of her official police duties and making inconsistent or misleading statements during an internal investigation, according to an email to police employees obtained by the The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Aleia Burley, 30, was also fired for violating the department’s vacation policy, failing to update her contact information in an internal administrative system and conducting herself improperly when she was arrested last year, the email said. Burley said she had no comment when reached by phone Tuesday evening.

Burley said she had no comment when reached by phone Tuesday evening.

Dallas promised to make Eddie García the highest-paid police chief of any major Texas city

“The decision speaks for itself,” García said in a text message when asked for comment.

Burley was arrested by Carrollton police in November and placed on leave for child endangerment after an off-duty incident, Dallas police officials said last year. The email to officials on Tuesday said she left her children home alone without adequate supervision.

The status of the criminal case was unclear; it did not appear in Dallas County court records and her attorney could not immediately be reached for comment. Police officials also did not provide further details about the charge, which linked her to a convicted felon.

Burley had been with the department since May 2021 and was assigned to the South Central Patrol Division.

He or she may appeal against the disciplinary measures in accordance with the civil service rules.
