1 dead after shootout with DEA agents during raid on Clayton County home, GBI says

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – A man is dead Tuesday morning after a shootout with U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents during a raid on a Clayton County home, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

At around 6 a.m., DEA agents entered a home in the 1600 block of Bagpipe Place in Conley to execute a federal search warrant for suspected drug offenses, the GBI said.

According to the GBI, agents also had federal arrest warrants for the resident.

When they entered the house, agents reportedly saw a man run into one of the rooms. He later appeared with a gun and fired at the agents, who returned fire and took cover, according to the GBI.

“Agents continued to hear gunshots coming from the man’s last known location but did not intervene,” the agency said. “They heard a single gunshot and later found the man suffering from a gunshot wound.”

The GBI said agents subsequently evacuated the home and called Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services.

The Clayton County Fire Department pronounced the man dead at the scene. The GBI said his identity would be released once his next of kin had been notified.

No agents were injured.

The DEA asked the GBI to investigate the shooting, as is customary in shootings involving law enforcement officers.

The GBI said the man’s body would be taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.

The agency said it would turn the file over to the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office for review once the office completes its independent investigation.
