Person killed in police shooting in Opelika allegedly confronted police with knife

OPELIKA, Alabama (WRBL) – The SBI is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon following a crash on Interstate 85.

According to Opelika Police, on June 11, 2024, at approximately 2:35 p.m., an accident occurred on Interstate-85 involving a semi-truck and a passenger car. Opelika Police received a 911 call about the accident, which required an immediate response from officers.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were attacked by a person allegedly armed with a knife. The situation quickly escalated and culminated in a shootout involving officers. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to protocol, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) was tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation.

The Opelika Police Department told WRBL that all available evidence, including video footage, would be turned over to the SBI to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation of the events.

Once the investigation is complete, the results will be forwarded to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office will present the case to a Lee County Grand Jury for review.
