A farmer from Garnavillo died last week from an electric shock while working in a corn field.

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to the area of 19518 Highway 52 south of the Clayton County Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 2, for a report of an electrocution. When officers arrived, they found a dead man in a cornfield. Firefighters and medical personnel were already on the scene.

The sheriff’s office said the man, 68-year-old John Joseph Berns, was spraying a cornfield when his tractor’s boom struck an overhead power line. He tried to get off the tractor and was electrocuted in the process.

Bern’s son, who was present at the time of the incident, attempted to perform life-saving measures.

The service for Berns took place on Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo.
