Gonzales police chief seeks fifth term, but has two challengers

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson has announced he will seek a fifth term in office this fall.

Two other candidates, Robert “Bear” Williams and Stephen Ussery, have already announced that they will also enter the race.

A native of Ascension Parish, Jackson graduated from East Ascension High School in 1988 and served five years in the Army before joining the police force.

He has been Gonzales Police Chief since 2008, when he became the city’s first African-American police chief.

Both of his challengers also worked in the police force.

According to his campaign announcement, Williams has 34 years of experience in law enforcement and is a graduate of East Ascension High School.

Ussery worked for the Gonzales Police Department for 21 years before retiring in 2019. Ussery is a graduate of St. Amant High and now works for the Ascension Parish school system.

The election will take place on November 5, 2024.
