Teenager charged in fatal car crash in Elk Grove Village – NBC Chicago

A teenager faces multiple charges, including negligent homicide, after a two-vehicle crash in Elk Grove Village last month left one person dead and four others injured.

The crash occurred at 11:22 p.m. on May 29 near Biesterfield and Meacham roads, according to Elk Grove Village police. An investigation revealed that a northbound Lexus failed to obey a red light at the intersection and collided with a Honda SUV.

The Honda, which was traveling east, had a green light, police said.

The Honda’s sole occupant was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, police said. The victim was later identified by family as Andrea Garcia, 45, of Des Plaines.

According to family members, Garcia, a mother of five children aged between four and 27, was on her way home from work at the time of the accident.

Four occupants of the Lexus – three juveniles and one adult – were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. They were treated and later released.

On Monday, Elk Grove Village police released an update on the case, saying the driver of the Lexus, a minor, had been arrested. The teen faces five charges, including speeding, failure to obey a traffic signal, unauthorized concealment of license plate and no headlights, police said.

The driver is also charged with negligent homicide, a Class 3 felony.

After the accident, photos and videos from the scene showed two heavily damaged vehicles with deployed airbags. Debris from car parts and items from inside the vehicle were scattered across the road.

A photo showed a fallen tree and a fallen light pole near the damaged Honda.

A few hours after the accident, several teenagers came to the scene and stated that the people involved in the accident might have been their friends.

“I came to the scene because I saw it on a friend’s Snapchat stories and I think he was involved,” said one. “It’s really horrible to see cars like that, just totaled.”

Last month, Garcia’s family members set up a shrine in her Des Plaines home to honor her life.

The police did not release any further details about the investigation.
