Will Draisaitl be suspended for elbowing the Oilers in their game against the Panthers?

The Edmonton Oilers are down 2-0 in the Stanley Cup final, but this might not be their only loss so far.

In last night’s 4-1 away loss to the Florida Panthers in game two, Edmonton’s star striker Leon Draisaitl seemed to let his emotions run wild in the third period.

With 9:28 minutes left in the third period, Draisaitl elbowed Florida captain Alexander Barkov in the face, causing him to leave the game and never return.

“This is not The Oprah Winfrey Show“My feelings don’t matter,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said of the play, adding that “the league takes everything into account” when it comes to a possible suspension.

As expected, Draisaitl saw the hit differently and received a two-minute penalty.

“I don’t think it’s frustration. It was just a punch. I don’t think there’s anything dirty about it. Maybe I got him a little high. But certainly not with the intention of hurting him or anything like that,” he said, according to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic.

Should the league deem it necessary to further discipline Draisaitl, news of a possible suspension or hearing by the NHL would likely emerge later today.

After opening the series in Florida, the two teams are on their way to Alberta. Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday evening at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
