Atlanta school board approves 11% teacher pay raise

According to a new report from 11Alive News in Atlanta, there’s great news for Atlanta Public Schools teachers! The Atlanta Public Schools Board approved an 11% pay raise for teachers, making it the largest pay increase since 2009.

This historic salary increase was finalized and announced Monday, June 3, and will take effect for the 2024-2025 school year. According to 11Alive, “teachers will receive an 11 percent pay increase and all district staff will receive a 3 to 5 percent cost of living adjustment.” The pay increase is expected to help teachers take better care of their own families, improve teacher morale, and ultimately provide a better future for students.

What else did the school board approve?

A teacher pay raise isn’t the only thing the board approved, mind you! In the same decision, they also announced several other budget plans, according to 11Alive, including:

  • $11.8 million for the Readers Are Leaders initiative to ensure students are reading at their grade level
  • $9 million to improve special education
  • $15.4 million for a new internal nutrition program

School may not be the first thing on your mind right now, as the 2023-2024 school year ends and we prepare for a sunny summer vacation! But this teacher pay raise is definitely a big step forward for the Atlanta public school system!
