Dr. Mohammad Ali from Mississippi helps Alabama teenager after shark attacks

A Mississippi doctor worked with a team of other doctors on a Florida beach over the weekend to save the life of an Alabama teenager after she was attacked by a shark.

Dr. Mohammad Ali, an interventional radiologist with Baptist Medical Group in Jackson, was vacationing in Rosemary Beach, Florida, on Friday when a shark attacked two Birmingham-area teenagers. Ali and Dr. Ryan Forbess of Orange Beach (Alabama) Family Medicine were among those who responded to help save 15-year-old Lulu Gribbin, who was critically injured in the attack. A friend of Lulu’s was also bitten by the shark but did not suffer major injuries in the attack.

“It was incredible,” Forbes said in a Facebook post. “It was just God’s will that everyone was there at the same time to help.”

Two men pulled the teenager out of the water. Ali and Forbess “were boogie boarding with their family and noticed a commotion and blood in the water not far from them,” Mississippi Baptist Medical Center said in a Facebook post. “After pulling their own family out of the water, both doctors rushed to help. Dr. Ali noticed the severity of the injuries and placed a tourniquet on her thigh and hand while the other doctor and emergency personnel also assisted.”

Lulu was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Pensacola where she underwent surgery, her mother Ann Gribbin wrote CareBridge.

“That was a big first step,” wrote Ann Gribbin. “When she was settled in, her first words to us were, ‘I did it.'”

“I am eternally grateful to the three surgeons and all the nursing staff and doctors here in this hospital who saved Lulu,” she added. “I am grateful to the doctors and nurses that day on the beach.”

Ann Gribbin said her daughter’s right leg was amputated mid-thigh and her hand is missing after the shark bit her. Lulu Gribbin will likely need four or five more surgeries to complete the amputations, her mother said in a Pensacola News Journal article.
