When officers tried to enter the apartment, the man fired several shots, backed away and then reappeared to open fire again, police said.

Police said they returned fire, hitting the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured, TribLive news partner WTAE reported.

The district homicide squad has launched an investigation.
