Border trade between Mizoram and Myanmar halted after bridge destruction

AIZAWL: Official border trade between Mizoram and Myanmar’s Sagaing Division has been suspended for the past three days after the Myanmar army destroyed a bridge on Saturday (June 8).

According to sources, members of the Myanmar army destroyed the suspension bridge over the Run River in the Teddim township area with explosives.

This bridge was an important link on the main road connecting Mizoram with the town of Tahan in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division.

The suspension of border trade, which is normally carried out through the Zokhawthar Border Trade Centre in Champhai district of Mizoram, has disrupted the flow of essential commodities, soft drinks, bread, various food items and electronic devices.

Mizoram has a 510 km long unfenced border with Myanmar, which facilitates both legal and illegal trade across this border.
