17-year-old Dalit girl in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, repeatedly raped and now pregnant

BHADOHI: A 17-year-old Dalit girl became pregnant after she was repeatedly raped by a man in a village under the jurisdiction of Suriyawa police station, police said on Tuesday.

SHO Ram Nagina Yadav said police arrested 26-year-old Raju Gupta, a resident of Dudwa Dharmapuri, on Tuesday for rape.

Gupta came into contact with the girl’s family while he was working with a rice threshing machine in a grain field, the SHO said.

He started visiting the Dalit family and when no one was at home, he raped the 17-year-old girl, Yadav said.

When the family noticed changes in the girl’s body, they took her to a hospital on June 8, where doctors determined she was pregnant, he said.

When asked about the pregnancy, the girl told her family that Gupta raped her whenever they were away.

On Sunday, the girl’s father went with the girl to Suriyawa police station and filed a complaint against Raju Gupta, the SHO said.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Gupta for rape, criminal intimidation under IPC and violations of SC/ST and POCSO Act.

Based on the victim’s statement, raids were conducted and Gupta was arrested near Suriyawa railway station, Yadav said.
