First Alert Weather in detail: Chilling on the motorcycle

The News10NBC team provides in-depth coverage of breaking news, traffic and weather.

ROCHESTER, NY – Temperatures over the past seven days have been relatively warm, with several days well above 25 degrees. This time of year, we expect more pleasant conditions and expect each day to be temperate. However, that is not always the case, and Monday is a good example.

Our high temperature this Monday afternoon barely reached 60 degrees. Could this be a record cold day? This is the kind of record that doesn’t get referenced very often. It’s the record “lowest” high temperature. In other words, the “coolest” high temperature for the day. If you look at the record books, you have to go back 143 years, to 1881, to find a colder high temperature for this day. We’ll exceed 57 degrees, but not by much.

Since we’re already well into June and it’s meteorologically considered summer, that cool air isn’t welcome for some folks. For example, if you’re moving quickly on a road bike or even a motorcycle, wind chill can be a problem. If you’ve seen the News10NBC First Alert Forecast, hopefully you’re wearing those thicker clothes.

Interestingly, even nighttime temperatures will drop quickly. Nothing dramatic for our northern cities, but in the deeper valleys south of Rochester, temperatures could be over 4 degrees. But looking ahead, we know the real summer heat is coming. The summer solstice (the official start of the summer season) is just 10 days away.
