Ryan Garcia arrested for alleged vandalism, video released

According to TMZ Sports, professional boxer Ryan Garcia was arrested on Saturday for vandalism at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.

Garcia’s attorney Darin Chavez informed TMZ of the update that the boxer was also hospitalized.

“(Ryan) was transported by BHPD to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment and, to our knowledge, he may face charges for public intoxication,” Chavez said.

TMZ Sports reported that they obtained a video showing Garcia being led out of the hotel in handcuffs. The video, which TMZ Sports said does not show Garcia’s face, appeared to show his back tattoos:

Garcia was arrested after allegedly damaging his hotel room and the hotel hallway, TMZ Sports reported.

According to TMZ Sports, after his alleged arrest, he “followed the authorities’ instructions and left peacefully.”

TMZ Sports also claimed that Garcia was “apparently under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs” at the time of his arrest.

A vandalism charge can become a felony in California if the damage is more than $400.

TMZ Sports had previously reported that a family member of Garcia ordered a “health check” on the boxer at the same hotel on Wednesday evening.

Police reportedly arrived at the Waldorf Astoria and determined that Garcia “had not caused harm to herself or others” before leaving, TMZ Sports reported.

The alleged call came days after Garcia announced his mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, which she later confirmed on Instagram.

The alleged wellness check wouldn’t be the first time an outside party has checked out Garcia’s mental health. The New York State Athletic Commission required Garcia to undergo a “mental health evaluation” before an April fight in Brooklyn, in part due to his erratic social media presence, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported.

According to Coppinger, in April the NYSAC “tested Garcia’s brain functions and gave him a standard competency test,” which he passed.

Garcia was unable to fight for the WBC junior welterweight title because he was three pounds overweight before the fight against Devin Haney.

He still earned a surprise majority decision victory over Haney despite testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance after the fight, Coppinger reported.

The boxer and his legal team have since claimed the tests were the result of “contamination of the supplement.” Coppinger reported that the matter was still under review as of May 23.

According to TMZ Sports, Garcia was still in custody at the time of the report.
