Some LGUs are suspending in-person classes due to the intense heat

MANILA, Philippines – Some local government units have suspended in-person classes for Thursday, May 8, due to extreme heat.

In separate notices, the following areas announced the suspension of in-person classes and the transition to online or asynchronous mode:

  • Pasay City – all levels (public and private)
  • Angeles City, Pampanga – all levels (public and private)
  • Santa Rosa, Laguna – Elementary through high school, public (through May 10)
  • Umingan, Pangasinan – Afternoon classes for preschool through high school, public (until May 31)

Based on the heat index calculated by the state weather bureau, the heat index in Metro Manila reached a sweltering 42 degrees Celsius as of 5 p.m.

Temperatures between 42 and 51 degrees Celsius fall into the “danger” category of the heat indices.

This can lead to heat cramps, exhaustion and even heat stroke if you stay there for a long time.
