Pennsylvania Senator treated after car crash on I-70 in Maryland

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pennsylvania State Senator John Fetterman was hospitalized for a bruised shoulder following a car crash Sunday morning on Interstate 70 in Maryland.

Fetterman and his wife, Gisele, were “involved in a car accident with another driver,” according to a statement from his Senate office, and were both evaluated at a local hospital and released within hours. The senator returned to his home in Braddock, Pennsylvania, and is expected to be back in the Senate this week to vote.

The Democratic senator was driving a Chevrolet Impala at the time, traveling west on I-70, when he was struck from behind, according to Maryland State Police. The driver of the second vehicle was also taken to the hospital, police said. Neither driver received a ticket for the collision.

Fetterman, 54, suffered a stroke in May 2022 while campaigning. As a result, he still has trouble speaking fluently and processing spoken conversations quickly. During congressional hearings and routine conversations, he often uses devices to transcribe spoken words in real time.
