School crossing guard arrested in Massachusetts; allegedly attacked woman and reporter

A Massachusetts school crossing guard was taken into custody on the same day last week following two separate physical altercations.

The 68-year-old man was arrested following an altercation with the occupants of a motor vehicle at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, at Taunton High School, Taunton Police Chief Ed Walsh said in a written statement obtained by the Taunton Daily Gazette, part of the USA TODAY Network.

The 35-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by Chaves after she sneezed and stopped her vehicle in the middle of an intersection on school property at the shared campus of Taunton High School and John F. Parker Middle School, according to police reports obtained by the Gazette.

Woman claims school crossing guard hit her with stop sign stick

Joshua DeOliveira, school resource officer for the Taunton Police Department, states in his report that when he arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 a.m., he found the woman “visibly shaking” and “crying hysterically” sitting in her van.

According to DeOliveira, she screamed, “He (expletive) hit me with the stop sign stick!”

The woman reportedly stated that she stopped her van after sneezing because she needed a tissue to “blow her nose real quick.”

At this point, the school crossing guard reportedly went to the passenger window and yelled at her to keep driving. The woman reportedly yelled back that yelling at her “in front of my children” was going too far.

The school crossing guard allegedly attempted to hit the woman with his stop sign baton by sticking it through the open passenger window, while also allegedly using profanity and telling her she needed to get out of there.

Instead of hitting the woman, the stop sign’s pole reportedly struck her daughter’s arm in the passenger seat. The girl later told DeOliveira she was not injured and managed to grab the sign and push it out the window.

The argument quickly escalated when the woman said she got out of her vehicle to confront the school crossing guard, who then “attacked” her with the stop sign baton.

The woman told DeOliveira that she landed on the ground in the middle of the intersection and that the school crossing guard “dragged” her and kicked her “multiple times” after she landed on the sidewalk.

DeOliveira stated in his report that the woman, who was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for examination, had “multiple abrasions and cuts on her arms.”

Police said she called her boyfriend, who arrived at the scene to drive the children home in the van.

School crossing guard was arrested twice in one day

Walsh said the school crossing guard was charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon in Taunton District Court on June 3. He was released on bail.

USA TODAY is not naming the man because the severity of the allegations against him is unclear.

“Taunton Public Schools is aware of a physical altercation this morning (June 3) involving a school crossing guard,” the district said in an earlier statement to WCVB-TV.

“The school crossing guard has been terminated effective immediately and is no longer an employee of Taunton Public Schools,” the district told WCVB.

The school crossing guard was arrested for a second time after local news footage showed him slapping, kicking and throwing sticks at television crews outside a courthouse following his arraignment in connection with the first incident.

Police arrested the school crossing guard at his home that same evening after they said they had seen “various” videos from news channels at police headquarters showing him “pouncing” on a Boston 25 News cameraman.

According to CBS Boston, he was charged with assault and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. The judge ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. His son-in-law, whose name was not disclosed, argued that he felt defeated.
