New chick at Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta has welcomed a new chick to the bird team. Meet Fig!

ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta’s ornithological team announced the latest addition to the family.

Less than two years ago, the bird team welcomed a pair of wrinkled hornbills, Malfoy and Strawberry. These endangered species are native to Southeast Asia.

In a social media post from last July, a Zoo Atlanta ornithologist said the birds became familiar with each other and hit it off immediately. The bird keeper said they didn’t expect them to breed because Malfoy is an older bird. In late March 2023, Malfoy and Strawberry hatched, raised and flew their chick, Blueberry, the bird keeper added.

In early February 2024, Malfoy and Strawberry introduced their new chick named Fig.

“This is the second successful chick our wrinkly hornbill pair has produced,” Zoo Atlanta recently wrote in a social media post.

The Bird team is also delighted to announce that our pair of wrinkled hornbills, Malfoy and Strawberry, have made it…

After hatching, Zoo Atlanta officials said Fig remained locked in the nest box with his mother and father, who provided him with food, for two and a half months. They added that Fig first met Malfoy in late April after Strawberry took him out of the birdhouse.

Fig will join Malfoy, Strawberry and Blueberry and be located in the Corridors for Change area of Zoo Atlanta.
